Orchids
Phalaenopsis orchids - often called "moth orchids" - are among the most popular and rewarding flowering houseplants you can grow. Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, these orchids naturally grow attached to trees, not in soil, absorbing moisture and nutrients through their roots and leaves.
Orchids are one of the largest plant families on Earth, with over 25,000 naturally occurring species worldwide - and Phalaenopsis are among the most accessible and beginner-friendly of them all.
Their long-lasting blooms can remain open for 2-4 months or more, with arching flower spikes that add effortless elegance to any space. And despite their reputation, Phalaenopsis are not delicate divas - they simply need sufficient light, proper watering, and good air around their roots.
Unlike many houseplants, they don't grow in potting soil. They prefer chunky bark mixes or sphagnum moss, which mimic how they grow in nature, allowing air to circulate freely around their roots.
